Chester, PA Drug Abuse and Crime

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Chester, PA is the number two city when it comes to the most dangerous city to live in these United States. This according to neighborhoodscout.com. Last year the City of Chester declared a state of emergency right after a shooting and a murder spree.  There were four people all inclusive of a two year old who had been murdered in the last week and a half in the city of Chester which is about fifteen miles away from Philadelphia.  Mayor Butler says, “Enough is enough.  It is very disappointing.  But we are not going to give up.”  The emergency declaration puts five sections of the city under heavy police control and implements 9 to 6 am curfew and this will last for at least five days.

Fox news reported this”  “A city in crisis is turning to drastic measures.  Chester is now declaring a state of emergency.  The Mayor of Chester has been prompted to take drastic action.  There was a murder of a two year old is an example of the violence going on in the city of Chester. It is only one of the four homicides in the last week and a half.  The police state has been declared across five of the most crime ridden sections of this city.  The state police and federal officers will be brought in to help police the streets.  No one can be on them without a legitimate reason.  The police will stop and question anyone violating that curfew.”

The incident that spurred all this is when shots were fired into a playground with about 75 to 100 people in it.  There were four people found that had been hit by bullets and one of the victims died from his injuries and the other injuries are not life threaten.  Witnesses say they saw the shots fired from a car heading northbound which was possibly a white crown Victoria.

“It is getting out of hand.  There is senseless violence in the streets of Chester.  That is why there are more police out there including State troopers.  That is why no one is allowed on the streets.”  Another
television station reported. The drug problem is a large part of this violence, and nearby Philadelphia drug rehabs are kept very busy.

All of this violence makes it hard to live in the city of Chester.  Drugs go hand in hand with unrest in any city. When the television stations are making their reports it is easy to see the frustration from the city officials.  There is no mention of drugs being at the root of all this violence.  Investigations be done they will find that street drugs, prescription drugs all have something to do with this situation. If you know someone with a problem, get him or her to one of the prescription drug rehabs today.

Prescription Medication

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Associated Press is reporting information that the Drug Enforcement Administration has gathered and they show that there is a dramatic rise between 2000and 2010 in the distribution of Oxycodone, and that is the key ingredient in Oxycontin, Percocet and Percodan.  There were places that showed increases of sixteen fold.  Then there is the increase of distribution of hydrocodone and that is the key ingredient in Vicodin, Norco and Lortab; in Appalachia which is the original epicenter of the painkiller epidemic.  All of these increases go hand in hand with a wave of overdose deaths, pharmacy robberies and other problems in New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Florida and other areas. Not to mention rises in admissions for New Mexico drug rehabs and the ones in other areas.

Pain relievers caused 14,800 overdose deaths in 2008 alone and the death toll is rising this reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Let’s look at some figures.  In this nation in the yeas of 2010 pharmacies dispensed the equivalent of 69 tons of pure Oxycodone and 42 tons of pure hydrocodone.  What does that translate to in everyday life?  Well that means there is enough drugs there to give 40 5 mg Percocets and 24 5 mg Vicodins to every person in the US.  It seems the DEA records shipments from distributors to pharmacies, hospital, practitioners and teaching institutions.  That is where these figures come from.

Gregory Bunt, medical director at New York’s Day top Village chair of drug treatment clinics believes that the increase is partly due to the aging US population with pain issues and there is a greater willingness by doctors to treat pain.  “Sales are being driven by addiction, as users become physically dependent on painkillers and begin “doctor shopping” to keep the prescriptions coming.”

Gil Kerlikowske, the US Drug czar stated to Congress in March:  “Prescription medications can provide enormous health and quality-of-life benefits to patients.  However, we all now recognize that these drugs can be just as dangerous and deadly as illicit substances when misused or abused.”

These Opioids like hydrocodone and Oxycodone can release intense feelings of well-being.  That is one of the reasons why many people are turning to this drug.  In the elderly this also helps with their depression, so it is said.  In the addict it keeps them feeling good and after all it is legal, more than the corner fix.

Some of us are knowing that this increase could be the result of pharmaceuticals marketing on the TV and other media that these drugs can be helpful.  Also doctors are absolutely giving out more of these prescriptions for pain in their patients.

These drugs are harmful to you and your body.  Taking them can lead to adverse effects in your life.  If you know someone who wants to get off these drugs; get them to an Inpatient treatment center or one of the prescription drug rehabs.  There they can get safe and natural ways to detox and withdraw.  Something can be done about it.

Veterans and Prescription Abuse

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

In as recently released government study veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan were the subject.  It was found that these veterans who had been diagnosed with PTSD were actually being prescribed morphine and similar powerful painkillers two times more often to vets with only physical pain and the biggest thing about this is that these vets are already at risk for alcohol and drug abuse.

The study also showed that the vets who developed PTSD;  already had pre-existing substance abuse issues and were four times more likely to be prescribed addictive painkillers than those without mental health problems.  So what do you think the result of all this is?  Suicides and other self-inflicted injuries and drug and alcohol overdoses were more prevalent in vets with PTSD who received painkilling drugs. And of course many will eventually require help from prescription drug rehabs.

They were prescribed these drugs with the hope that the emotional distress that accompanies chronic pain will also be reduced but this hope is not fulfilled and these drugs can sometimes make emotional problems worse.

The study looked at 141,029 men and women who came from Iraq and Afghanistan.  These vets had been diagnosed with non-cancerous physical pain and half of them were diagnosed with mental health problems like PTSD.  The Department of Veterans Affairs paid for the study.

Dr. Karen Seal is the lead author of the study.  She is treating patients at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and she stated:  “I have sometimes prescribed opiates to war veterans, but only if other painkillers have not been effective.” This sounds like a rational policy, but not all doctors are as cautious, and many of these patients can end up in Sacramento drug rehabs.

The Veterans Administration said while their pain management program has been called a model of care, “we recognize that more work needs to be done.”  Another study done by the RAND Corporation from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America states, “Among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, rates of psychological and neurological injuries are high and rising.  Nearly 20 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans screen positive for PTSD or depression.  Although these statistics are troubling, we have yet to see the full extent of troops’psychological and neurological injuries.  Service members are still deploying on long and repeated combat tours, which increase the risk of blast injuries and combat stress.  Rates of marital stress, substance abuse, and suicide are all increasing.  Divorce rates among female Marines were nearly three times the national average, and the Army suicide rate hit a 27 year high in 2008.”

In the VA sponsored study, it was found that more than three-quarters of the opiate prescriptions given to vets – 77 percent came from primary care physicians.  That tells me that when these vets got home they went to see their doctor for help with their problems and they gave them opiates to help; but little did they know that these drugs will only make things worse.  Yes, we need to more to help these vets.  They went to fight for our country.  While that is an ideal purpose it is noted here that there should be a balance of taking care of themselves as well as our country.

Texas and Prescription Medication

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) are investigating many health care providers who have given out prescriptions for large amounts of powerful psychiatric drugs.  Some of these drugs were given out to children.  The Dallas Star-Telegram is stating that the HHSC has already referred three of the providers to the state attorney general for possible prosecution.  This was given to the news by Thomas Suehs, Health Commissioner.  Some other providers have been referred to the state’s private Medicaid claims processor for “further recoupment” after an investigation was done in 2010 having to do with the use of addictive mental health drugs that were thought of as fraud and abuse. Could this be part of the reason that rehabs in Louisiana, Texas, and the rest of the country are so full of folks with prescription abuse problems?

Suehs stated:  “Some of the providers in question have been forbidden to participate in the Texas Medicaid program, including one convicted in a criminal case and another accused of inappropriate billing and coding of hours related to patient services.  The presence of this high rate may not necessarily be indicative of fraud or abuse on its own, though high prescription rates could indicate a problem.” It could also indicate that if you have a problem with prescription drug abuse, you may need to consider getting yourself help at one of the Texas drug rehabs.

Star-Telegram did an investigation of their own and used prescription numbers to identify the physicians who were involved and count their prescriptions total by drug type.  The report stated: We also looked at other mental-health drugs that have cost taxpayers about $1.3 billion over five years.  The analysis found that in two years, the 72 Medicaid providers identified by the state for writing the most prescriptions handed out 186,992 and that averaged out to 2,597 each.”

One physician in Houston wrote out 27,000 prescriptions for Xanax.

Antidepressants were prescribed on a large amount also.  These drugs are dangerous even when they are not being over prescribed.  They can lead to irritable, restless agitated and aggressive behavior and cause a person to do things that don’t make sense and are downright criminal.

The overprescribing of drugs is going on all over this country.  In Texas they are doing something about it.  It looks as though that would be an easy way to defraud the system.  If you have elderly parents and their doctor is putting them on antidepressants and anti anxiety medications monitor the situation with your parents.  You don’t want to see them end up in one of the prescription rehabs. It seems as though the elderly may be a target for those who want to make money.

Made From Overseas Ingredients

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Just recently there was a report issued by the US Government Accountability Office that stated up to 40 percent of all pharmaceuticals sold in the US are actually manufactured in countries like India and China.  I looked into this even further and found that as much as 80 percent of all ingredients used to manufacture drugs come from overseas as well.  This also includes all those that are put together here in the United States.  The thing that shocked me the most is that the report stated that the FDA inspected only 11 percent of all foreign drug manufacturing facilities as opposed to the 40 percent it has inspected domestically.

There are 152 registered drug manufacturing facilities in Canada, 299 in India, and 566 in China.  The FDA only conducted 368 inspections among these countries and their drug facilities that comes out to 649 facilities have never received an inspection.

The New York Times explains that most of the ingredients used for manufacturing critical drugs like antibiotics, allergy medicine, diabetes medication and others are now almost exclusively produced in China or India.  What is a factor that is disturbing is a growing number of people that are seriously injured or killed because of tainted drugs produced overseas and there has been almost nothing done to address this problem.  In 2008 it was reported that at least 81 people died from a tainted heparin drug that was produce in India.  It had in it an ingredient that had come from China.

I do believe the FDA is suppose to be there to make sure we as Americans are protected and made safe from drugs that could hurt us.  If they are not inspecting these facilities then they are not having control over these drugs.  They may not be as reliable as we think.  I do know that when the FDA approves a drug like Despondex which is a drug you take because you are too happy, then it is time we look closely at what the FDA really stands for.

Policeman and Painkillers

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

A young boy looks at a police officer and has great dreams of being, “just like him when I grow up” and that is a very good dream to have.  Police Officers work hard each day to keep our communities safe from reckless people and people with intentions to commit crimes.  This young child goes to the academy and gets to put on a uniform and then he is out on the streets.  What will he run into?  There will be crimes that he has not seen before.  He has to answer to his boss as well as the public.  Policeman work very hard each day and they have low pay so is it any wonder that after being on the force for many years they may come up with the idea to help criminals, you know “be on the take”  .  Stamfordadvocate.com reported just recently about the arrests of 20 people in drug trafficking ring that smuggled tens of thousands of prescription painkillers through Florida and Westchester County airports.  It seems there was a drug trafficker who made more than 65 trips via car or airplane from Florida to Connecticut in less than a year and he was carrying up 8,000 pills of painkillers each trip.  When he was caught he became a cooperating witness and so that is how the police officers and TSA agents were identified and arrested.  They had taken gift cards or cash bribes for helping this trafficker travel through airport security.

That my friend is an example that represents a very small percentage of what policemen do each day.  They do put up with crimes that a mostly drug related.  It has to be very frustrating for them because addicts can be destructive and most times don’t care what they are doing to their families and society.  They can’t care they only have their next fix on their mind.  Theweek.com reported that the number of Americans killed each year by drugs is on the rise largely due to prescription substances that are perfectly legal.

A day for a police office may go like this.  One call is family disturbance because the wife does not want her drunken husband to beat her anymore.  Call number two can come from the local pharmacy because someone broke in last night and stole several boxes of painkillers and other prescription drugs.  Call number three is to an apartment complex where someone suspects that their neighbor is cooking up some meth and can they please investigate.  That is how their day goes.  He deals with people all day and most of the calls are drug related.  Whether it is painkillers, alcohol, heroin, cocaine.  Police officers need help to get the message out that doing drugs is not the answer to life’s problems.

The real answer to drug abuse is to help people to never do them in the first place.  And if they do start abusing drugs, they need help with their prescription drug addiction.

Prescription Drugs: How Pervasive Are They?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

There was a ladies group who would gather for a friendly Bridge game each week.  One of the ladies was found to be fooling in her purse and was asked, “What are you looking for?”  The answer was she was looking for the Ritalin.  She had a prescription but it was for her son.  She was however taking it.  These cute little pills make me focus better and so I can play better.  She had taken her son to the doctor because the school counselor had advised it to help him focus better.  She tried this little pill to see what kind of effect her son is experiencing.  What she found was a pill that is classified by the DEA as a Schedule II narcotic.  It made her feel good so she took it along with her son.  His grades by the way got better but what she did notice was that he had developed an attitude of aggression.  She was on the third prescription that was filled.  She had decided to take her son off these pills but did not want to stop herself.

This is all too common stories we are getting from many places.  Ritalin is a drug that nearly 5 percent of American children between the ages of 6 and 17 are taking because they were diagnosed with ADHA.  There has been much speculation given by authors that ADHA was being over-diagnosed and that Ritalin, and the other amphetamine-like drugs, was being prescribed in many cases to children who would respond well to family therapy and other programs at home and at school.

Let’s go back to our mother.  She is now very happy that she found something that will help her get her work done because she has more energy and does focus better.  She now tells herself that she has ADHA and has had it all along and that is where her son got it.  The things we tell ourselves to keep using a drug.  What she is doing is using this drug as speed because my friend that is what it is.  It is a stimulant.  What we have here is a suburban mother who feels like she found an answer to make her happy and what we actually have here is an addict in the making.  This answer to her problem will soon become her problem.

Drug Use Reaches Highest Level

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

There was a survey done by the national Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2009 and it showed that  drug use in the United Sates has gone up to its highest level in 8 years.  It was found that 8.7 percents of Americans ages 12 and older which is about 21.8 million people, said they used illicit drugs.  That stands for a 9 percent increase in the 2008 rate.  This increase was because of the increase of marijuana which is one of the most commonly used drugs.  When someone is using they usually report it as marijuana being the drug.  What a wakeup call for this nation.  All of the stratagies of the past that have helped are not doing the job now.  Getting educated is the answer.  So it is up to parents, teachers, coaches and community leaders to find a way to get it across to our young folks that using drugs is dangerous.  They really do not get the fact that it can hurt their bodies.  Drug abuse can ruin their school grades or their jobs.  Officials are saying that the rise in drug abuse goes along with a decrease in prevention messages targeting young people.  They need to get the message out that these drugs are harmful.  Teenagers are not thinking that drugs are harmful they are thinking they are cool.  There are also a number of students who are getting their regularly prescribed drugs for ADD so this gives them the message that drugs are helpful.  The drug helps you pay attention in school and keep the study habits going good.  What are we teaching our young children?  The message is drugs are an answer.  No wonder there is an increase in drug use in this country.  The users of this prescription drug called Ritalin are very likely to start using stronger drugs and they can absolutely become distributors to their friends.  So parents pay attention if your child comes home with a study problem don’t bring him to the doctor to get a prescription.  Get him some help with his study, like finding out what he doesn’t understand.  If you or someone you love needs to get drug-free contact NARCONON Louisiana at www.drugabusesolution.com or call 877-340-3602.  They will help you withdraw and detox from drugs and /or alcohol in a safe and natural way.  Counselors are with you 24/7.

Prescriptions Drugs Cause of Deaths

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Did you know that Prescription drugs attributed 45% of the cause of deaths where the street drug abuse combined attributed only 39%.  That is eye opening.  In 2005, 4.4 million teenagers in the ages of 12 to 17, in the US admitted to taking prescription painkillers, and 2.3 million took a prescription stimulant such as Ritalin.  @.2 million abused over the counter drugs such as cough syrup.  The average age for first time users is 13 to 14.  We really need to get educated and educate our kids.  It seems like destruction is going on out there.

Depressants, opioids and antidepressants are responsible for more overdose deaths than the other hard core drugs in the street like cocaine, heroin and amphetamines combined.  That is a staggering figure.  Where are these kids getting the prescription drugs?  In the US Most deaths use to take place in inner cities in African-American neighborhoods, but they have now been overtaken b white rural communities.

According to the national Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, teens who abuse prescription drugs are twice as like.ly to use alcohol.  Five times more likely to use marijuana and 12 to 20 times more likely to use illegal street drugs.  They actually think these prescription drugs are safe and they start there and work their way up to more dangerous illegal drugs.

I know some of the teens share their Ritalin with each other at school.  They are actually excited when mom takes them to the doctor to get help with their study behavior.  Now they can get their “speed “.

Education is what is needed.  These teens have no idea what they are doing to their bodies.  They have no clue that they are starting a life with drugs that maybe will lead to more serious drugs and then a very unhappy life.

If you or someone you love needs to get drug-free, call us now at 1-877-340-3602.  A certified drug abuse counselor is standing by to assist you.

Prescription drug addiction doesn’t have to be a fact of life.  Do something now.  Reach out for help.

Antidepressants Abused

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

We will talk about one category of prescribed drugs that are sometimes abused.  Antidepressants.  These include Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, Effexor and Remeron.  You can get these prescribed drugs in multi colored capsules and tablets.  If you or a friend are on these drugs you can get certain effect like:  Insomnia, Irritability, Nervousness and anxiety, Violent thought and actions, Agitation, Suicidal thoughts or suicide, Tremors, and Hostility.  Wow!  Why would anyone want to take these drugs?  Just reading the effects makes me shiver.  But wait there is more:  Sweating, Irregular heartbeat, Aggression, Criminal behavior, Confusion, paranoia, Hallucinations, psychosis, an inner irritation, inability to sit still.  Wait a minute, what do these do for you.  What is the purpose one would get on these drugs?

Because you are depressed.  Well, I would rather be depressed than all of those things listed above.

One study found that 14% of the young people taking an antidepressant became aggressive and even violent.  An example of this is a 12 year old boy developed violent nightmares about killing his classmates, then being shot himself.  The dream continued to feel “very real” after awakening, and for days he experienced dreams of killing that seemed increasingly real.  He became acutely suicidal until the drug was stopped.

The study gave several other examples of extreme and irrational behavior from individuals on these drugs.  But wait isn’t that being depressed and isn’t that why they took the medication in the first place.

Withdrawal symptoms of antidepressants include suicidal thoughts, aggression, anxiety, depression, crying spells, insomnia, dizziness, vomiting, headaches, tremors, and electric “zap” sensations in the brain.  All of that says to me is I will never put that drug in my mouth to poison my system.

If you or someone you love needs to get drug-free, call our hotline at 1-877-340-3602.  It’s important to get the facts about prescription drug abuse.  We can help.
